Yeah I have to say don't get caught up in the whole what engine should I use thing, otherwise you'll end up jumping back and forth between say unreal and unity because one has a feature more easily implemented than the other or some bullshit. If you want to make games other than JRPGs right now and want to learn about game development, I'd say grab Godot or Unity and give them a whirl. If you change your mind in 5-10 years, you can shift focus and pick up a programming language and/or start learning Godot, Unreal, Unity, etc. The long and the short of it is - if you want to make JRPG style games, you're serious about learning about game development, want to release a game for people to enjoy, but don't really care too much about making money - get RPGMaker. Now, since you list it as a system you yourself like - then yeah, I'd wait for it to go on sale and pick up MV or MZ for under $40. but everyone knows what RPGMaker games look like and what they sound like, so using all that art you paid good money to use will have a lot of people instantly dismiss your game as a lazy cash grab, no matter how much time you spent on it and how much you changed it to not be like a lazy RPGMaker game. You buy all the versions, you can take all the music and art assets from any of them and cram them in other versions, and you can make as many games as you please with whatever content you like.

The biggest bonus for paying for it is also one of it's biggest problems - by buying RPGMaker, you gain an unlimited license for it's assets within the RPGMaker family. People have made VNs, racing games, Zelda-style Action RPGs are popular (and have varying levels of jank), point and click adventure games, and so on, all with varying levels of success. On the other hand, it is very, very good at making S/NES style RPGs - your Final Fantasy, your Dragon Warrior mimic can be made right out of the box with no adjustments at all - and the further you drift from that, the harder it gets and the more you spend time fighting RPGMaker itself. The later versions (as in, like 2005's RPGMaker XP onward) even have a scripting or plugin system to allow you to either expand it yourself or, more likely, find people who have expanded it.

Teaches you things like Doors, Chests, NPCS, etc do not exist as separate things but are all the same sort of class of object, teaches you how to manipulate variables and booleans (RPGMaker calls them switches), teaches you a bit about balance, and so on. It'll give you a better understanding of how to separate the "playing" part from "building" a game.

On the plus side, because it does all the heavy lifting for you, you can get it installed and have a playable "technically a game" with quests that the game recognizes you completed in a day (assuming you pick up things pretty quickly). Thank you all for the very, very informative comments! I was wondering if something like RPG maker is a good place to start for beginner game development (just because it seems simple and I've always loved RPG maker games) or if instead I should start with something like unity instead.Īll help is appreciated! sorry if this breaks rule 2ĮDIT: Thanks for all of the replies, I really didn't expect to get so many! My friend recommended RPG Maker XP so that's the one I got, I think ill chip away and teach myself stuff for a hour or 2 every night. My coding knowledge is very little, I know a bit of C#, C+ and (I know this probably wont help with anything but) I'm fairly decent with JavaScript and HTML. I've been looking at game design school courses but most require like actual experience and a folder with previous projects. Hey so I've been interested in game development since I was a kid, And I've been trying to set myself up for a future with game development but I'm not sure where to start with actually coding and creating a game.
